Recent Awards
At Lifespan, our people make us great. This is reflected in the
following honors and awards that we have received.
Lifespan
- In 2010, the Lifespan health care system was named one of the Top 100 Integrated Health Networks in the United States. The selection process rates health care networks on their performance level and degree of integration in eight categories such as clinical integration, technology integration, use, services offered, financial stability and physician participation. Lifespan was one of only seven integrated health networks in New England to be included in the Top 100. Lifespan has been included on the Top 100 list seven times in prior years.
Lifespan health system has been named to the 2006 Verispan
IHN 100, a ranking of the 100 most highly integrated health
networks (IHN) in the country. The 2006 edition identifies the
top 100 IHNs among 566 local and regional non-specialty networks
in the United States that meet critical success factors. In
the Northeast, Lifespan ranked 11th among the top 20 networks.
Lifespan has been included in the IHN 100 ranking six times
in the past seven years.
- One of "America's Healthiest Companies"
Lifespan and its partners have been designated as a Silver Well Workplace by the Wellness Councils of America and we are now recognized as one of “America’s Healthiest Companies.” The honor is given to companies who embrace their responsibility to maximize the health and well-being of its employees and have a vision of protecting and enhancing the health of employees as part of the fabric of the organization. Thanks to Sheila Jacobs and the Working Healthy staff for their efforts throughout the year to offer our staff healthy options, tips and educational sessions.
- Lifespan received the CIO-100 Award for Enterprise Integration
Technology. This award recognizes Lifespan as one of the
world's most technologically advanced health care systems. The
award is given by CIO magazine to companies that demonstrate
impressive progress toward enterprise integration, bringing
information from various sources into a single view. Lifespan
was the only health care provider selected in the worldwide
competition, joining corporations such as CISCO, Dell, Dow Chemical,
GE, IBM, Amazon.com and Wal-Mart as winners for 2002.
- Lifespan was named "Most Wired" by Hospital
and Health Networks magazine, the journal of the American
Hospital Association, for its use of Internet technologies to
improve patient care. Hospital and Health Networks annually
surveys the nation's health care systems on their use of high-tech
communications, and its "Most Wired" status is awarded
to what they call "technically savvy" hospitals.
- Lifespan has been named to the SMG IHN 100©. The
listing recognizes the top 100 integrated health care networks
in the nation. Lifespan was ranked 32nd this year and was the
highest rated health care network of all New England-based health
care networks. The rankings are an attempt to quantify how well
the systems have integrated the operations of their acute-care
hospitals.
- Lifespan CEO, George Vecchione accepted the 2003 CEO IT
Achievement Award at the Modern Healthcare annual meeting
held in Chicago on Tuesday, June 10, 2003. Vecchione was named
a winner of Modern Healthcare's and the Healthcare Information
and Management Systems Society's CEO IT Achievement Award because
under his leadership Lifespan has embarked on 150 cutting-edge
information technology projects that make the four-hospital
system one of the most "wired" anywhere.
- At the 10th annual Worksite Health Awards, Lifespan
hospitals and Lifespan Corporate Services were all awarded Superior
Awards. The Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, Blue Cross
and Blue Shield of Rhode Island and the Worksite Wellness Council
of Rhode Island annually honor local companies that encourage
their employees to lead healthy lifestyles and demonstrate a
commitment to their employees' health and wellness. Working
Healthy, Lifespan's employee health promotion program, submitted
the application on behalf of Lifespan.
- In 2003 Lifespan's marketing and communications department
was awarded a Bell Ringer Award from the Publicity Club
of New England. The award serves to recognize and honor excellence
and achievement in the communications and public relations professions.
The department was also awarded four National Healthcare
Advertising Awards from Healthcare Marketing Report.
Rhode Island Hospital
and its Hasbro Children's Hospital
- Thomson 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals
The Miriam Hospital was named among the nation's 100 top hospitals for cardiovascular care by Thomson Healthcare, formerly known as Solucient. Thomson’s annual study identifies hospitals that are setting benchmark levels of performance for cardiovascular services throughout the nation. It recognizes the hospitals and their management teams for superior clinical, operational and financial performance in the area of cardiovascular service. The Miriam received this award in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007.
- Rhode Island Hospital is one of only 122 hospitals across
the countryand the only one in Rhode Islandto receive
the Consumer Choice Award from the National Research
Corporation. This is the 7th year in a row that Rhode Island
Hospital has been named the most preferred hospital in Rhode
Island. The hospital also received the Consumers Choice Award
for Cardiac Heart Care Service.
- Rhode Island Hospital's medical intensive care unit was recognized
as one of the top intensive care units in the country
by the National Coalition on Health Care and the Institute for
Healthcare Improvement. In addition, the MICU at Rhode Island
Hospital is the only paperless intensive care unit in the Northeast.
- Rhode Island Hospital's trauma intensive care unit staff
members received the Excellence in Caring Award at the
National Teaching Institute of the American Association of Critical
Care Nurses for their demonstrated commitment to nursing excellence.
- Rhode Island Hospital has been recognized as an America's
Top Doctors hospital. 22 of RIH physicians were honored
in their medical specialties, putting RIH in the top 8% of hospitals
nationwide.
- Rhode Island Hospital received a $8.4 million/5-year grant
from the Center of Biomedical Research Excellence to establish
the state's only cancer research center.
- Rhode Island Hospital earned the major distinction of the
HCIA Inc.'s annual 100 Top HospitalsBenchmarks for
Success list, ranking as a national benchmark.
- Hasbro Children's Hospital received a Literacy Award
from the Rhode Island State Council for the Read to Me Program.
- The hospital also received a Citation Award for design
by the American Institute of Architect's Academy of Architecture
for Health.
The Miriam Hospital
- The Miriam Hospital earned the Magnet Recognition for Excellence
in Nursing Services, the highest recognition possible from
the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a branch of the American
Nurses Association.
- Named to AARP's Top 50 Hospitals. The study, published
in Modern Maturity magazine, was conducted by Consumers'
Checkbook.
- The Miriam Hospital was named one of the Solucient 100
Top Cardiovascular Hospitals, published in a recent issue
of Modern Healthcare. The Miriam received this award
in 1999 and 2002.
- The American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) has named
The Miriam Hospital a quality respiratory care provider.
- The Nuclear Cardiology Laboratory at The Miriam Hospital
is accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation
of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories. The lab is the only one in
Rhode Island and one of only four in New England to earn this
distinction.
- Named one of the Top 20 teaching hospitals in the country
for its coronary angioplasty procedures in the first cardiovascular
study by HCIA, Inc.
- Named the second "Best Mark" performer overall
and the top "Best Mark" in an outpatient setting for
knee arthroscopy by OR Benchmarks, Inc., a national consulting
firm.
Emma Pendleton Bradley Hospital
- Bradley was the first hospital in the United States
devoted exclusively to mental health for children and adolescents.
- Bradley Hospital's residential behavioral health care programs
earned a rare perfect score from JCAHO and received its
highest accreditation in the hospital's history from JCAHO.
Newport Hospital
- The Drexel Birthing
Center at Newport Hospital received the prestigious "Baby
Friendly" designation from the World Health Organization
and UNICEF. Only the 40th hospital in the United States to receive
this award, Newport Hospital was recognized for providing an
optimal environment for the promotion, protection and support
of breastfeeding. Hospitals are awarded this status only when
trained, independent evaluators have determined that all hospital
practices meet the rigorous "Baby Friendly" standards.
- Newport Hospital received a Silver Well Workplace award
from the Wellness Councils of America for successfully meeting
health promotion standards and constantly aiming to improve
the health and well being of its employees.
- The American Cancer Society recognized Newport Hospital with
its Excalibur Award. The society's Excalibur program
recognizes and acknowledges individuals, corporations and foundations
whose extraordinary generosity enables the society to provide
lifesaving research programs and unsurpassed achievements in
cancer control.
- National marketing researcher Parkside Associates ranked the
Birthing Center in the top two percent compared with
more than 200 hospitals' obstetrics departments. Physician care
was significantly higher than the national norm, while nursing
care garnered an exceptionally high score of 96.8%.
- The Arthritis Foundation of Rhode Island presented its Program
Achievement Award recognizing Newport Hospital as the outstanding
program site in Rhode Island for reaching the greatest number
of people with a variety of programs.
