A national effort to save lives one by one, in offices, shopping malls, community centers and public gathering places.

Why?
Because every year 460,000 people die of sudden cardiac arrest before emergency rescue reaches them. A number of those lives can be saved if four steps are followed immediately:

  1. Bystanders call 911
  2. Bystanders begin CPR
  3. Patient receives defibrillation from a trained user
  4. Advanced life support is delivered by EMTs

How?
The AED (automatic external defibrillator), as it is sometimes called, requires only a few
hours of training to be operated safely. Placed in plain sight in public gathering areas, the AED can make a life or death difference in the case of sudden cardiac arrest.

The goal of the Lifespan Community Training Center is to make defibrillators as availabile
in public spaces as fire extinguishers.

What?
The AED is a computerized medical device. It can check a person’s heart rhythm and recognize when a shock is needed. The AED uses voice prompts, lights and text messages to tell the rescuer what steps to take. The American Heart Association strongly encourages businesses, clubs, and other institutions where people gather to acquire an AED and then:

  • Notify the local emergency medical services office
  • Ask a licensed physician to provide medical oversight to assure quality control
  • See that responsible persons are trained in both CPR and in use of the AED
